Snow Plan B

Beginning in January, the Jackson County Public Schools (JCPS) will be implementing a “Snow Plan B” for selected bus routes on days when federal, state, and most (but not all) other roads are clear of snow and ice.  The purpose of this plan is to decrease the number of school days missed due to snow and ice during the winter months.  This should maximize instructional time, decrease the number of breaks in instruction, and provide a longer summer break for families.

If a bus route is operating under Snow Plan B, one or more roads normally served by that bus will not be served.  Instead parents of students residing on those roads will be asked to bring their students to designated drop-off locations at specified times in the morning for bus pick-up.  In the afternoon, parents will be asked to meet the bus back at the locations to pick-up their students.  The roads impacted by Snow Plan B, as well as, the designated locations and times will be communicated in writing to each student’s parent or guardian.

There will never be an instance when all bus routes will be operating under Snow Plan B.  It will only be used for necessary routes.  JCPS will not be able to communicate the specific bus routes impacted using the Lexington television stations.  As a result, Snow Plan B will never be announced using these outlets.  Instead, parents will be notified using the JCPS automated calling system.  The information will also be announced on the Jackson County Public School’s Facebook page, WWAG, PRTC Channel 9, as well as, on the district website (www.jackson.kyschools.us).  It is also important to note that the decision to implement Snow Plan B will never be made in the early morning hours.  This decision will only be made and communicated before bedtime on the day prior to its use.

JCPS could also use a delayed start to school (most commonly a two-hour delay) to deal with winter weather.  In addition to the methods of communication listed above, the use of a delay would also be announced on the Lexington television stations.
